Measure Your Space
Measure once, buy right. This guide walks through measuring shelves, drawers, closets, and pantries — as guidance, not a guarantee. Always confirm against the listed dimensions on the product page.
What you need
A tape measure, a pencil, and a notepad (or your phone). Measure in inches. Write every number down — do not trust your memory for the third shelf when you are standing in the store aisle or at checkout.
Measure a shelf
Measure three numbers: width (side to side), depth (front to back), and height (shelf surface to the shelf or cabinet above). Measure twice — once at the front of the shelf and once at the back, since shelves are not always perfectly square. Then subtract about half an inch of clearance on each side so bins slide in and out without scraping. Check your numbers against the listed dimensions on the product page: the bin's width must clear your shelf's width-minus-clearance, and its height must clear your shelf's height.
Shelf-depth starting points
| Shelf depth | Fits | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 12 in | Shallow bins, spice racks | Measure door clearance — bins must clear the door when it closes |
| 12–16 in | Standard bins, containers | Leave 1 in of pull-out room at the front |
| 16–24 in | Deep bins, can dispensers | Front items hide back items — use labels and pull-out bins |
| Over 24 in | Deep pantry bins, turntables | Nothing should live where you cannot see or reach it |
Measure a drawer
Measure the interior width, depth, and height — not the outside of the drawer front. Pull the drawer all the way out and measure inside the box. Subtract about half an inch of clearance on each side so dividers and trays slide freely. Check the drawer height too: a tall divider in a shallow drawer will stop the drawer from closing.
Drawer-fit starting points
| Drawer interior height | Fits | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Under 2 in | Flat trays, slim dividers | Utensils and flat tools only |
| 2–4 in | Standard dividers, small bins | Check handle clearance on the drawer above |
| Over 4 in | Deep bins, stacked dividers | Heavy items low, light items high |
Measure a closet
Measure four numbers: rod length (between the supports), rod diameter, shelf-to-shelf height, and floor clearance (floor to the lowest shelf or rod). For a hanging organizer, check the rod diameter against the hooks, and check that the organizer's height clears the floor. For shelf bins, treat the closet shelf like any other shelf: width, depth, height, minus clearance.
Closet starting points
| What you are fitting | Measure | Typical check |
|---|---|---|
| Hanging organizer | Rod diameter, rod-to-floor height | Hooks fit the rod; organizer clears the floor |
| Shelf bins | Shelf width, depth, height | Bin clears the shelf above by half an inch |
| Shoe rack | Floor width, floor-to-shelf height | Rack fits under the lowest shelf or rod |
Measure a pantry
Measure each shelf's width, depth, and height, and measure the door clearance — the gap between the shelf front and the closed door. Bins must clear the door. For under-sink organizers, measure around the pipes: width on each side of the pipes, and height from the cabinet floor to the lowest pipe. For a can dispenser, measure the shelf depth and the height of your tallest cans.
Common measuring mistakes
- Using exterior dimensions. Always check your space against interior space — the outside of a drawer front or a bin's outer shell is not the space you get.
- Forgetting clearance. A bin that "just fits" will scrape, stick, and annoy you every day. Subtract the half inch.
- Measuring once. Shelves bow, cabinets vary front to back, and drawers are rarely square. Measure twice.
- Guessing the height. A bin that is half an inch too tall will not let the shelf above sit flat — or the drawer close. Measure height every time.
- Forgetting the door. In pantries and cabinets, the door has to close. Check door clearance before ordering.
